It is an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) nad is crossed by the C2C Cycle Route, the Pennine Way footpath and other cycleways, footpaths and bridleways. It is the source of the three major rivers of the North East of England - the Tyne, Wear and Tees, as well as the source for the Derwent, Eden, Allen and Lune rivers.
